Roger Fenton grew up in L.A. and always loved escaping to the movies, never dreaming he might one day become involved in making them. But that all changed when he hit tenth grade biology class, which brought to a halt his aim to be the doctor his mother so hoped he’d be.
From then on it was the film industry or bust! Making Super 8 movies with his friends – check! UCLA film school – check! Working as a set PA on awful, low-budget films – check! Finally he wedged his foot into an editing room door and never looked back.
Roger had the good fortune to befriend future director Bryan Singer and his uniquely talented editor/composer John Ottman, leading to assistant jobs on four of their collaborations. Landing smack dab in the middle of the very hectic post-production on THE FUGITIVE, with six editors and twelve assistants, was likewise a great learning experience.
From 2000 through 2004 were his “comedy years,” some maybe not the strongest credits on his resume, but great people and a lot of fun. One of those, a charming Showtime movie called COAST TO COAST, afforded Roger the opportunity to cut significant parts of the movie and work very closely with the charming director Paul Mazursky, and to hear many of his great showbiz stories. Oscar winner and fellow dog lover Richard Halsey should be thanked for his mentorship on that project.
In between all of this would come editing jobs of all stripes - shorts and documentaries, promos and trailers, a reality show pilot and segments for an animal show, and award show clips and tributes for the American Cinema Editors and the Art Director Guild. Recent gigs have had Roger re-cutting parts of feature films and doing dvd directors cuts. The most recent is THE MYTH, starring Jackie Chan, where he re-shaped the Chinese action film for North American distribution and English dubbing. |
